Sock it to Sarcoma! is proud to introduce Juliët Schreurs, the latest recipient of our PhD research grant at The Kids Research Institute Australia.
Sock it to Sarcoma! is delighted to announce the awarding of the seventh PhD grant to promising researcher Juliët Schreurs at The Kids Research Institute Australia. This grant, part of our commitment to advancing sarcoma research, will support Juliët’s innovative work in developing mRNA-based immunotherapies for sarcoma treatment.
Groundbreaking Research with Real-World Impact
Juliët’s research focuses on harnessing mRNA-based immunotherapies to treat sarcoma. This cutting-edge approach aims to boost the body’s immune system, helping it recognize and fight cancer more effectively. The ultimate goal is to develop more targeted and effective therapies that not only combat sarcoma but also reduce the severe side effects associated with current treatment options.
“I am incredibly grateful for the support from Sock it to Sarcoma! and its generous donors, who are directly enabling the advancement of our sarcoma research and helping to bring us closer to better treatments for those affected by this disease,” says Juliët.
A Journey Inspired by Patient Experiences
Juliët’s path to sarcoma research began during her master’s degree when she interned with the Sarcoma Translational Research group at The Kids Research Institute Australia. During this time, she not only gained valuable laboratory experience but also connected with patients, families, and members of the sarcoma community.
These personal interactions had a profound impact on Juliët: “The experiences deeply resonated with me, as I saw firsthand the immense challenges faced by young patients and their families, particularly when effective treatment options are limited.”
These encounters sparked a strong sense of purpose and determination in Juliet to improve outcomes for sarcoma patients. Her growing interest in emerging treatments like mRNA therapies and immunotherapy represents hope in areas where traditional therapies have fallen short.
Looking Forward
Through her research, Juliët hopes to contribute to advancing knowledge in the sarcoma field, ultimately improving the lives of patients and offering their families new hope for the future.
Sock it to Sarcoma! remains dedicated to supporting promising researchers like Juliët who are working tirelessly to develop better treatments for sarcoma. We look forward to sharing updates on her progress in the coming months and years.
About the Scholarship
The Abbie Basson Sarcoma Research Top-Up Scholarship is awarded through the University of Western Australia, in conjunction with a Federal Government or University Scholarship. It offers a stipend of $15,000 pa for 3.5 years; laboratory expenses of $10,000 pa for 3.5 years and a $6,000 travel component across the period of the Scholarship. Named in honour of Abbie Basson who recognised the critical importance of local research in making an improvement to the understanding of and treatment for people diagnosed with sarcoma, the first PhD Scholarship was awarded in 2014, with five students having successfully completed their thesis and one in the final stages of their studies.
