WA Sarcoma Awareness Week 2016

June 13-19th 2016 will see the third WA Sarcoma Awareness Week happening around the state, with educational and awareness events raising the profile of sarcoma in the community.

June 13-19th

The week begins down Monday 13th June, when the Bell Tower is going to be lit up in our signature pink and teal. Join us at the Henry’s Roof Top Bar, the Revely, Elizabeth Quay from 5.15pm to launch the week.  Please RSVP here or email events@sockittosarcoma.org.au

Our free annual scientific symposium is being held at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research on Friday 17th June from 9.00am, with our keynote speakers being Dr Ralf Schneider from the Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland speaking about proton therapy and Professor Alan Boddy from the University of Sydney, speaking on pharmacogenetics. There will also be presentations from local researchers, clinicians and of course, community speakers affected by sarcoma. Please RSVP here or email events@sockittosarcoma.org.au.

The afternoon session concludes with a sundowner at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research commencing at 5.00pm. We warmly invite you to join us for the afternoon speakers and stay on to meet the Sock it to Sarcoma! team at the sundowner. To help with catering, please RSVP here or email events@sockittosarcoma.org.au.

Throughout the week we will be having our hospital displays and on Friday 17th June, we will be having a community awareness stand in the Murray Street Mall where you are welcome to come down and talk to some of our team and meet Suzy Sock It!
We are also looking for volunteers to help on the stand so If you can help out for a couple of hours on Friday 17th, please reply here or contact events@sockittosarcoma.org.au

On Saturday 18th there will be a family bike ride beside the river. The group will meet at 9.00am in the car park at the bottom of Coode Street, South Perth and have a leisurely 15km round ride to enjoy the morning. Wear your Sock it to Sarcoma! cycle shirt or teal and fuschia colours to create awareness. A coffee van will meet us at the finish around 10.30 for those that need their morning caffeine kick! If you would like more information, contact us at events@sockittosarcoma.org.au

We are also delighted that for the first time, the annual Kalin Foley Cup, held between Wanneroo and Ocean Reef Yr 7 Junior football teams is being held during Sarcoma Awareness week. Kalin sadly lost his battle with sarcoma in 2014 but the wonderful past support from the West Perth Football District is being extended this year to include all of the North Metro Districts, West Perth, Claremont and Subiaco. All of the junior and senior teams, including the WAFL sides, are being invited to wear odd socks over the weekend for sarcoma awareness.

If you would like to support us, come and hear about current treatment directions and ongoing research; host a morning tea; hold an ‘odd socks’ day; wear teal and fuschia; join our ride; watch the North Metro Districts football teams; enjoy the coloured lights: – all in the knowledge that you are raising awareness for those diagnosed with sarcoma, rare and aggressive primary bone and soft tissue tumours.
